Why is it that schools invest money into a curriculum program, utilize it for 3 months, and then test the students. More surprisingly, is when they are shocked that the test scores are not on the Scholarly level. And instead of giving the program more time, often teachers are swept away into a Professional Development class to learn the 'new pilot program' that the school has just purchased. When I return to my classroom, I see unopened boxes of software, countless supplies of reading material and a slack of assessments to use with the program. Here WE GO AGAIN. Stop wasting money on programs that are receiving little use!
As the article stated, it took centuries to develop a system to get 90% of students to come to school, so why do we expect a miracle when addressing students academic levels. There is no 'one' program that can educate all students. Instead of all the unnecessary programs, lets us the money to keep qualified teachers, provide updated resources, and invest in technology.
I believe in the power of teachers but the odds are against us when we have Lawmakers who keep repeating the same unrealistic speech of getting "all students" on Superman Level academically. Instead of saying what they think we want to hear, lets jump into action. First, lets start with creating Unified Education Standards for all States.
Why isn't this kind of system already in place. Why should Michigan content skills be different from Georgia or Illinois. These are the things that I would like to see address and not just a great motivational speech. I've heard the speech about how all students can learn, how teachers deserve to be paid more, and how our children are not applying themselves fully to their education. We (teachers) are aware of these things. Look, less talking and more action!
Lawmakers/Principals we have our expectations- "What are you going to do to assist us in reaching these goals."
