While reading the textbook, Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works, my level of interest was heighten. After reading the nine instructional strategies, I noticed that I used some of the strategies yet I was clueless on others. As a new teacher, I struggle with instructional strategies. With a diverse classroom I question how best to teach my students. With the help of the textbook, I think I will be able to give students more ways to use technology which will better their learning. The book didn’t just state factual information but it also gives technology websites that I can use in my classroom.
As stated by Professor Ump stead, “sometimes the instructional strategy is the reason for lack of learning.” I found that my confusion of strategies limited my teaching. I had the technology but wasn’t using it correctly. I wasn’t familiar with many of the internet websites that the book listed. I used technology equipment but the students weren’t active participants. Often time they sat at the computer and visited the same websites. I never bothered to teach them about software programs or organizational tools.
I found this to also be the problem with fellow teachers. The district provided each classroom with four computers but many have collected dust. Teachers will not use the computers because they are uneducated and they don’t see the benefits that they give to students. When the principal noticed these unused computers she took action. Teachers were given classes on how to use the computers. Then bi-weekly newsletters where distributed which listed helpful websites. The most interesting issue addressed was how to revise our lesson plans. Teachers were asked to include the technology that was being used during the lesson. I find that when I documented the technology I would use, I was better prepared.
The books clear definitions and accessible resources which collaborate with state standards, makes this a great resource for teachers. I’m glad that I was able to receive this information as a early in my career because now I can make changes. I welcome the benefits that technology can bring to my classroom. Instead of using technology only for providing recognition (class newsletters and certificates) and non linguistic representation, I will work on using technology for reinforcing effort and identifying similarities and differences. This book was an easy read that I will continuously reference for instructional strategies.
