Free Technology for Teachers: A Good Case for Learning a Second Language
Today I read the article entitled, A Good Case for Learning a Second Language. I really enjoyed reading this article. It was very detailed. After I read the article I spend hours looking through each website mentioned. The websites were kid friendly and fun. I will definitely bookmark some of the information.
Although I teach 5 year old children, I firmly believe that teaching children a second language is important. Because I believe in this, I try to include Spanish in my daily lessons. When I set-up my classroom, I label objects with English and Spanish translation of words. Over the years, I have found that songs and books are a good way to introduce a new language. I use Spanish in the listening center by providing students with books on tape in two different languages. During our computer time, I require the students to listen to a Spanish reading of a book before listening to it in English. One website that I love to use is StarFalls.com. During our circle time we sing the Spanish and English version of Nursery Rhymes.
In addition to Spanish, I introduce my students to sign language. Last year, I had a guest speaker visit the classroom and model how to sign the alphabet. Then the students used signing letters to spell their name. They really enjoyed this activity! During our Fun Friday, we put on our Sign language DVD and practice asking for water, saying please, or I love you, (three of their favorite phrases). The things that I teach my students are minor but they like learning about different cultures and special needs of others.
I don't expect the students to remember all the Spanish or Sign language but I think this is the ideal age to teach students a variety of information. Why not teach them another language? Sadly, sometimes we as parents and teachers don't challenge our students to their full potential. If students can learn the lyrics to a popular song, mimic the conversations of their parents, and memorize all the parts to their favorite movie, They can learn a second language.
As an educator, often times we get consumed with major things like state standards and eliminating the small details in life which are not be tested. Educators, parents, and lawmakers need to realize the injustice that we are doing to our children by not teaching them a second language. As the article stated, in the near future it will be EXPECTED that all students be able to speak multiple languages in order to compete in the world. A second language will benefit students in their careers and social life. Lets 'lean' more on the Arts (language, music, art, drama) and less on teaching to the test.
