Conn. Looks at Raising Age for Kids to Start Kindergarten
Today I read an article about the proposal to raise the age for Kids to Start Kindergarten. I was surprised that Connecticut has a cut-off date of December 1 because I thought all states required students to turn five by September 1st. Although, I think that the proposal is a good idea, I would like schools to also proposal offering preschool to all students.
In my previous school district, students began attending school at the age of three. This early enrollment gave the students two years of preschool: One year in a three year old room and then they are transferred to the four year old classroom. While in the three year old room, they learn about routines, personal hygiene, and being independent. During their second year, they spend more time learning curriculum instruction using cooperative group settings.
Many critics may argue that three years old is too young for kids to begin school, but I disagree. I believe that children should attend preschool as opposed to basic daycare because it gives them a chance to start learning and interacting with others. Preschool also give students a chance to get the hang of school and being away from their home. Each year, I receive a new 'bunch of munchkins' in Kindergarten and I notice a big difference between those who attend preschool and those who do not. It really helps when students are already developed in social interaction, are not dealing with abandonment issues, and understand the concept of school.
After reading the article, it is my hope that Connecticut excepts the change in the age requirements of Kindergartens but I also hope that they research the benefits offering preschool to all students as well.
