Philadelphia Schools Attribute Gains to Summer School
While reading the article entitled, Philadelphia Schools Attribute Gains to Summer School, I couldn't get over the fact that 597 seniors required summer school to graduate high school. This number is alarming! I commend the district for offering a summer school program which is beneficial to students but, again, why do they have some many students in attendance. I could not believe my eyes when the article further stated that 60,000 total students between the ages of preschool and twelfth grade used the services this summer.
With so many students attending summer school, their should be questions as to why they aren't being successful during the regular school year. Maybe it is time to do some research in the classroom and investigate. Does the teacher need more training? Is student behavior the problem? Is the school lacking resources? There has to be some reason to justify such high numbers in summer school.
Once again, I commend Philadelphia schools for being able to improve academic levels of students but the number of students who attend summer school is too high. I challenge the district to improve regular classroom so that summer school is not needed at all.
